Thanks, those are great ideas. Unfortunately, I just don't don't have a lot
of still life items. Since I'm a new teacher, I don't have a collection. I
picked up some stuff from the dollar store, and I've been asking friends and
family for things, but I haven't gotten much. I'm planning on posting a
wishlist in the next newsletter, and I'm hoping that the parents will respond. How
exactly do you teach them value and shading. I taught them about hatching and
cross hatching, explained that it's best to layer rather than just go in with
lots of pressure. I explained that they need to notice the highlights and
deep shadows and then try to see the subtle value changes in between. I had them
create a value strip, but I think I need to find a clearer lesson. It's hard
because I have 30 students, and they can't really see me well when I do
demonstrations. I try to sketch on a paper on the board, but I know there must be
a better way.
