[teacherartexchange] Two new projects posted on our website

Hi all,
   I have two new sets of artwork posted on our Lower School site. The
first one is in 3rd grade: Self-portraits playing a musical instrument.
The second one is in 5th grade: Pen and Ink illustrations

The portraits were done following a powerpoint viewing paintings of
people playing instruments that I assembled from a google image search
of that title. I also had images of musical portraits by Japanese
school children that were wonderful. I want to put the credit for those
images into my powerpoint. Does anyone remember a website with awesome
Japanese student work that had self portraits playing musical
instruments, children in gardens, children on a farm, and other
incredible work? It was posted about a year or year and a half ago on
either this site or the yahoo site. Those portraits were really the
reason I wanted to do this assignment, as they were so charming and
inspirational. I loved the detail and painting techniques the students
employed. But what I also loved was the way the children drew so
uninhibitedly. My children were amazed by the detail and depth of their
work, and I pointed out to them that the children who did them were deep
thinkers but not perfectionists. We discussed perfectionism as a
stumbling block that kept you from getting your ideas out. In these
portraits you could see that students often had hands that were too big
or too small, etc., but it didn't matter at all, in fact, we agreed that
the childlike representations of body parts were rich with detail and
though at times out of proportion, that somehow added to the overall
charm of the portraits. I got my children to really loosen up by
discussing them in that way. I told them that it was much more
important for them to get out their ideas than it was to be a
perfectionist, as their ideas would have a hard time escaping their
perfectionism. I told them that if a hand was a little too big or
small, or a leg a little too long or short, etc. we just weren't going
to worry about it. It would be more important to stress over not
including enough details in their work than getting things perfect.
They bought it, and I think they did a great job. I especially love the
3_2 group. Check out Grace and Julian!!! WOW. One thing I did that
really helped them was to print out pages of musical instrument photos I
downloaded from the internet. I had pianos in many positions, drums,
saxaphones, clarinets, violins, etc. for them to look at. But a few
children even made up their instruments, which was fun. Ellie did that.

I did another new lesson with class 5
students using William Rowe's art deco illustrations as an example.
Dover has a book of his illustrations. While we were at it, I threw in
a lot of art deco work for them to look at in a Powerpoint...buildngs in
New York, metal work, household decorations, jewelry, stained glass, and
black and white illustrations popular at the time by a number of
dfferent illustrators. We used William Rowe as the springboard, but the
other work influenced their selection of subject matter. We observed
the heavy use of geometric shape and pattern, nature themes, and
classical and mythological themes in the work we looked at in the
Powerpoint. We also noticed how ornate many of the designs were versus
how clean and geometric some of the other designs were. I pulled all of
my images from a google search for art deco art.
