Stacy, My 6th graders just finished contours. After introduction and practice we used fruit. Each had their own piece of fruit (apples, bananas, oranges, etc) and they made 5 progressive drawings on long paper. 1st one of whole fruit, then one after a few bites had been taken, etc. They outlined with sharpie and added complementary colors using watercolor crayons. They turned out well and it was really motivating!!
