I have kindergarteners for one hour each starting the first day of school. I
wouldn't have it any other way. After 7 weeks, they now can spend almost the
entire work time about 30 minutes) on their project. We do an introduction
activity and they are learning to clean up. That takes up the entire hour.
In the beginning, I do an intro activty (usually read them a story), do a
demo, they do their work (in the beginning, maybe 15 minutes, some take far more
time) then I have a variety of activities, reading (well...looking at books),
building with blocks and legos (since I have started doing this I have noticed
a huge improvement in their scuplture when we move to it), or free drawing to
take home (I keep all their work in portfolios until March).
We gradually move away from the "free time" activities to getting them to
work longer and longer on one project. It works for us!
