Some years my students wer so loud I had to use a bell or a whistle to get
their attention--they didn't like it and neither did I. My room is very big,
and made of concrete block, as yours probably are. It is really hard to be
heard with a gang of rowdy middle schoolers. I'm not too far from retirement
and decided that my last few years of teaching were going to be as comfortable
as possible--so I bought myself a little wireless
sound system for under two hundred dollars. It has a lavalier, a headset,
and a hand held mic. when we have class discussions i give the kids the mic. I
can' tell you how much difference it has made for me not to have to shout to
be heard. I wish I had done it years ago.
