Well, I stepped away from my computer for a day, and I can see my
Kindergarten cats have been insulted! Thank you to those of you who understood
and wrote in support of my lesson...but I still have a few things to say...
I got many compliments on those cats at my art exhibit, and I thought
it would be an interesting lesson to share. My goal was not to make the
parents happy, it just worked out that way. My goals were to teach the students
about warm/cool colors, introduce them to a new medium and an unusual use for
and old one (drawing with glue), reinforce listening skills/following
directions, teach them how to break down a complicated subject into simple shapes, and
perhaps to give them a chance to be successful and have fun. If I could get my
principal to agree to it, I would have brought in an actual cat or two for
them to draw, but I didn't think that was possible, so I worked with what I had.
To add to that, I personally don't see how copying Masterwork is much
different than copying your teachers work. (To my Kindergarteners, my art is
Masterwork anyway.) It is all part of the learning process. I do not do
EVERY lesson step by step, but on occassion, especially at this age, I think it is
a valid way of learning. How else would you teach a 5th, 6th, or 7th grader
to draw a room/building in perspective if you did not show them step by step?
If anyone knows how, let me know.
Also, if anyone has ideas on how else to fill up two hours of
Kindergarten art each week, all year long, without going nuts, let me know that too.
