I do a discussion/demo w/ 1st graders- focusing on asking them, where do our
bodies bend? point out where the joints are. Then I suggest using simple
rectangles or ovals to "assemble" the body. I insist they have to pick a pose
where therir arms AND legs are bent somehow- I combine this w/ a painitng in
the spring- they draw. color, cut themselves out of paper, then the next week
paint a seasonal scene , and glue themselves into it. In the painting, they
have to brighten w/ yellow, deepen w/ blue,
create tints and shades. I show them how to mix brwon fromt eh primaries, use
brushstrokes too. I never allow stick figurees- even in K. They need to get
that "language of shapes" from the very first day they're in your room.......
