I have a third grade class that has never had a good day. Their work is very
low, but they are not low kids. They are my last class of the day which
doesnt help things. They will not clean up after themselves, the talking is
constant, even when I am giving directions. We have a card flip/color change
policy for behavior at the school, but it doesn't work for this class. They
just dont care. Mom and dad have had so many calls home that they just dont
respond anymore.
I feel awful for the few children who are desperately trying to learn and
enjoy art. Today I lost it. We have been preparing to make paper mache masks
on plastic face forms, simple, slow, step by step. The entire third grade is
doing a wonderful job, except... you got it, this class. Today, the class
listened long enough to get a small cup of mache glue and that was it. The
glue was everywhere, refused to clean up, yelling across the room, glue in
hair, plastic cups broken, paper towels all over the floor, and Im
embarrassed at the lack of control I feel when they are in the room. I hate
feeling like an art nazi, but next art class there will be no talking. none.
zero. or they put their head down and get a zero or get out. and I have to
stand by this. I am just being bowled over by them.
Their teacher and I have met several times rearranging seats, pulling
privledges, calling parents. To no avail. I am at an absolute loss.
Even my incentives have no effect.
Sadly, these are THIRD GRADERS!!!
sigh,
thanks for letting me vent
