Re: Special Ed Students in Art

Date: Mon Oct 22 2001 - 04:36:28 PDT

The reason the laws were created were to protect the special students that
can do and will do. I love my special little artist but when they can't
talk or move their hands and on or below the pre-3k level and trying to do
what 5th or 6th it is heart rendering. I am so thankful I have my five boys
coming in a small group. We have been able to see an improvement in the
skills this year. We have a boy in a wheelchair and he is active in is
classroom and doing everything. We have autistic kids in classes following
the curriculum and no problem. I have had students with no arms and they
work. What I'm trying to say is when there are kids with feeding tubes that
the teacher has to change or clear that just because the parents want the
student in the class is not necessarily right for the student. I am not a
nurse and I couldn't handle changing a bigger kid or messing with the
necessary for life things for them. This discussion could and will go on
forever but it will take regular ed kids parent to rise up and do something
about it. The regular ed kids are the ones losing out and parents don't know
it. I believe it should be a case by case situation of how to place these
kids. They need and deserve the best for them. I know for a fact that some
of these parents want them in school even if they are sick. Some of these
parents need to take some of the responsibilies and stop using the schools as
daycare. Now the student that are just a little slow the law was made for
them. I would fight for them and even some that are more than a little slow.
