terrible teacher?

We, at the lower levels, need to do our part too. They shouldn't wait until
they are in HS to have to get their work done. Even in 5th and 6th grade, I
require all projects completed. It's a subject. I want respect for the
subject and respect as a the students as well as the parents,
and staff.
This is a rude awakening. I know that when they go on to Jr High
school...deadlines are deadlines. I tell the parents this at open house, and
I tell them to expect rubrics. I think it's important that we develop good
work habits early. Anyone can come in before school and complete work.
Concerning HS: Up to half of the courses they take in HS (If they are on a
block) are elective courses. It doesn't do anyone any good to think in terms
that they are all blow off classes. As long as you are fair, and stated
everything clearly, you are doing the right thing. If they don't want it,
word gets out and they will sign up for the blow off class. You will
eventually get kids who want to learn. Keep high standards and you will be
rewarded immeasurably. It may take a bit...but worth it. You will be much
happier in the long run.
