I live in VA, not too far from Colonial Williamsburg. Our 4th grade students
learn about Colonial VA. One project that is successful, is trade signs. We
have students look at examples of trade signs and also discuss the types of
trades from Colonial days. We discuss the differences between advertising
from today and back then. Then, they create their own trade sign (paper).

There is a teacher resouce area on this website. Also, if you click on
search and type in "trade signs" you can access examples of signs and a list
of various trades.
