The Sport of Life and Death: The Mesoamerican Ballgame
Saturday, September 22, 2001 -Sunday, December 30, 2001
The world's first team sport began in southern Mexico around 1500 B.C. and
continued until the Spanish Conquest. Played with rubber balls in stone
courts, Mesoamerican ballgames combined elements of modern-day basketball,
football and soccer. The popularity of these games inspired ancient
artists
to create masterpieces glorifying the sport and its heroic athletes. This
will be the first major traveling exhibition on the ballgame in the United
States, and is being organized from collections in the United States,
Mexico
and Europe. Catalogue will be available. Visit the exhibition website at
www.ballgame.org.
