I wanted to correct Jill when she said the Mayor has done nothing with the NYC board of Ed.
Mayor Guilliani is the best thing that has happened to NYC since the 69 Mets!
It is well documented that the city government has nothing to do with the handling of the board of ed. The mayors office has tried many times to gain control over the board with out success.
The board of Ed is a miserable place to work with low pay and terrible thank less conditions. The alternative of working in a NYC suburb is usually not a good one. The competition for jobs in NYC suburbs is incredibly difficult and are very politically enhanced, you really have to know someone to get in, being an excellent teacher by itself is not enough. Waiters and bartenders who work in NYC make much more $$ than teachers.
