An art teacher friend of mine has another neat idea for "free time" (the
postcard drawings reminded me of it).
She has a variety of art prints from old calendars available, and when the
kids (middle school) have free time, they have to "translate" a print into a
cut-paper mosaic. They go through magazines or the construction paper scrap
box to find the colors they need, and they use very, very small pieces and a
They keep the pieces (from one time to the next) in an envelope in their
cubby, along with the print and the paper they're gluing onto.
I was quite impressed with the finished results, and the kids seemed to
enjoy doing them!
