"Is this good enough"

Argh, I am doing a painting project with
my eighth graders. It is a project that
the kids beg to do each year and their
brothers and sisters did it in when they
were in eighth grade years ago with the
old art teacher. They want their
paintings to look like their brother's
and sister's paintings but when I give
the guidelines and suggestions that they
need, they get mad because they "don't
like it that way." they don't want to
overlap and they just can't think of
anything else to put into their
paintings. So the paintings are
basically one color with a few random
items dribbled over the board. There
are a lot of great things to be learned
in this lesson, but the subject matter
seems to be a problem. I hate having to
answer them when they ask, is this good
enough yet.
Thanks for listening,
