Re: Inner city school problems

Date: Thu Oct 26 2000 - 02:42:46 PDT

I just started teaching in an inner city middle school and I have empathy
for you, but no answers. When I left the building yesterday their was a child
in a puddle of his own blood. He had been attacked by an outside group of
boys from the high School. The school is on the edge of being pretty
disorderly, yet many of the teachers and administrators are working to
maintain and environment that is safe and condussive to teaching and
learning, but the community is one that is hostile and full of anger and
frustration. The inner city is not with out enormous problems, social ,
political, spiritual, economic and cultural. The school seems to be the
place to release some of this frustration and sometimes with catastrophic
results when it is acted out. Your problem with the supplies, over crowding,
unruliness and destruction is just the tip of the ice berg. Just hang in
there and I hope that you are a Praying person.
