Eureka! I think you may be thinking about "Kindred Spirits" by Asher B.
Durand, who was a friend of Thomas Cole. The painting was done in 1849 and
is in the collection of the New York Public Library. By the way, Thomas
Cole is one of the two men depicted in the picture.
