smelly paint

I am a new art teacher who has inherited lots of supplies, including gallons
of opened liquid tempera that absolutely reek. It is truly a horrible smell.
Can anyone tell me what would cause this and if it can be fixed so the paint
can be used? Warm colors seem to be the worst. They are Dick Blick premium
and student grade temperas. thanks.
