still life with the little guys

I have done still life drawings with my
kindergartners. Last year I set up
different sizes of pumpkins and gourds
and some leaves on a cart and put it in
the middle of my room. I gave them
drawing boards, colored paper and
pastels (no pencils so they couldn't
erase) The drawings were sooo
fantastic. Some of the kids just drew
from what they knew a pumpkin to look
like, but many others were really
looking and figuring out how the lines
were supposed to go. Pumpkins can be as
easy or difficult as you want it to be.
I have also done this with stuffed
animals, art supplies, sports equipment,
different shaped bottles, a gum ball
machine... My older students know that
if they finish a project early that
there is always a still life to work
on. They enjoy the challenge, and if I
don't have one set up they will go to
the shelf and create their own!
