Within the last couple of years, I think it was last fall's (1999) issue,
Family Circle magazine wrote an article on getting kids ready for school. In
this particular article was a school system in Texas that was cited for
increasing its overall t-cap scores by adding art to its curriculum. Art was
made an integral part of the curriculum in all subjects and they had very
good results score wise. I think I kept the article, but I will have to look
for it. It was encouraging! Nashville, Tenn. has made art mandatory in its
elementary school system, so they might be able to supply some statistical
information for you. Also the county school system in Shelby County, Tenn.
has art teachers in its elementary school system, but the city of Memphis
does not. That also might provide some comparative information for you.
