There are so many behavior problems in public schools...(it wasn't like this
in the 60's when I went to an all girls private school), has public school
been like this for a long time? The kids don't seem to come in as freshmen
'owning' their education. The prevalent attitude is to get thru the day
without having done a single thing -
I expect good behavior, hard work, I expect them to CARE!!!! I am often
Electives are dumping grounds, but I even tell the counselors, give me that
kid, I'll see what I can do...
But then there are some kids in each class who do care and they make it all
worth while. My job is to civilize, sensitize, love, nourish, rehabilitate,
encourage, push, pull, drag, plead, etc and incidentally, teach art too!!
Lots of special ed, learning disabled, emotional problems, broken homes, lots
of damaged kids out there - and I live in a little teeny town in Texas, can't
imagine what you deal with in big cities.
I love my job - once I figured out what my job really is!!
Am I the only person who teaches reluctant, underachieving, little monsters
who won't work for you unless they truely believe that you love them even
when they are at their most unlovable???
I can and do teach art - but I teach alot more life! :-)
