I've updated my website to include more of the illustrated portfolio =
cover pics. The kids (grades 5-12) did a nice job with this =
pre-instruction project, and it gave me a chance at the beginning of the =
year to get a feel for their skills, problem-solving ability, work =
ethic, etc.

My upper schoolers are now in the middle of a unit on drawing. I've got =
a few examples of perspective drawings, based on the wonderful =
interactive internet lesson plan by our list's own Harold Olejarz. More =
pictures will follow--staying too busy to photograph a whole lot of =
stuff yet! =20

Today we did something that worked GREAT! I'd started taking individual =
pictures of students last week in preparation for gridded =
self-portraits. To intro this today, I chose one picture from each =
class, used Photoshop to convert it to gray scale and then "poster edge" =
it (so that it looked more like a drawing), printed it to 5x6 size, and =
then cut it into 30 one-inch squares. Today I gave students a piece or =
two of the photo and a 2x2 inch square. (Just before that, I had them =
do a quick value scale in pencil.) I've got mixed levels/grades in my =
classes, so I gave the more advanced students parts that couldn't be =
disguised (such as eyes), but most students got squares that had =
different shades of gray on them. It was so cool when I started gluing =
the 2x2 squares onto a separate sheet of paper--and they could tell who =
it was! Of course there were distortions and inaccuracies, but it was =
close enough, and they really had a blast with this. Tomorrow I'll =
intro Chuck Close and then they'll start gridding their photos. (The =
picture that they did today is up on my site, but not the lesson plan =
yet.)

My junior schoolers are working on Art of the Middle Ages projects. No =
pictures or lesson plans are online yet, but their heraldry shields, =
Sculpey castles and cottages, and foil-tooled dragons will soon be =
making an appearance.

back often as more pictures and lesson plans for these and other =
projects will be uploaded!
