Someone mentioned their kids not liking the music. I have to agree with
Bunki. I'm a music dictator. After my first year I swore off radio stations
in the classroom (I hate commercial radio) (and choosing a station caused WAY
too many fights), I stuck to CD's.
Then I thought, well, I certainly like working to MY music, perhaps I should
let the kids choose THEIR music as a special reward for doing homework, etc.
So I passed out raffle tix for doing homework, and, lo and behold, a result I
did not anticipate: many kids (I teach high school) DID NOT WANT TO BRING IN
THEIR MUSIC!! Fear of negative criticism from others. I'd just keep picking
names until I got to someone who was willing to bring in music.
The standing rule was No Swears, No Violent or Mysogynistic Lyrics! (that
sent them to the dictionary). CD after CD, that rule was broken again and
again. It was as if the kids had NO music that could fit those limitations.
Rap was the biggest offender. So I finally gave up. I'm back to being Music
There is a CD I play for classes who complain about my music. It's Gorecki's
(pronounced Goretsky's) Symphony No. 3, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.
Besides being achingly beautiful, the first movement is entirely strings, and
bass strings at that (I have no clue of musical terms - you're talking to a
deadhead here). It starts off SO QUIETLY you cannot even hear it, and slowly
grows and grows. What is great about this is KIDS DON'T REALIZE YOU'VE PUT
ON MUSIC! They just do their work, and little by little there is beautiful
music. They've never complained.
