Re: Teacher preparation across the board was Re: Art Teacher Preparation

Kim et. al.
I hope a German art teacher will weigh in with information on teacher
prep in Germany. When I worked for the German Marshall Fund of the
United States, writing and editing their journal, I met and
interviewed many Fachleiter(master teachers)for whom we had a
program. After the Wall fell, we worked in Eastern Germany on
democracy building in education and I visted a Fachleiter and spent
time in his gymnasium (academic high school) classroom. I also spent
time with a new teacher in her second year of mentoring, also in the
East. There is much more professional development and close mentoring
of new teachers in Germany compared to the US. Lots and lots of
observation and modeling. We Americans might find this degree of
oversight uncomfortable, but what I observed and discussed with
German teachers led me to believe that they have a better grasp of
their subjects and how to manage a classroom than our new teachers
do. Mine was a journalist's quick take on a complex subject. I hope
an expert will speak to this. I sure would like to be called Herren
Doktor Professor and be accorded the respect I saw given teachers in
their communities both in the East and West of Germany.
