Columbus was a Genoese--from Genoa, Italy--and many Italians mistakenly
feel an attack on Columbus Day celebrations is an attack on all
Not much to say about it--I'm an Italian-American--tried to convince
others not to take it personally--doesn't work though. Most protesters
are older, bluecollar conservatives, (though there's a whole new
generation coming up with a similar POV) who are holding onto this
tradition as if their lives depend upon it. In a way it's like refusing
to move from a neighborhood that was once Italian, even though all the
other Italians have moved out.
