I recently started working for what was once considered a model artist-run
organization. Having undergone a "merger" with a well-respected local
museum, the organization is having trouble establishing itself within the
artists' community and within the general community. Its offices are in the
museum and only some of its programs are held in an off-site exhibition
space that it controls part-time. We were recently rejected by the local
arts agency for an operating funds grant based on what is now a very low
concentration on the education component of our mission. A component the
board shows little interest in as it is not exciting to them.
As a possible remedy to this, I have conjured up the idea of creating an
educational service that offers training to artists in the self-development
and fulfillment of arts-in-community-development educational programming.
Of course I came up with this idea with no experience of my own in AIE.
So... I was wondering if anyone out there has any experience with a similar
idea (past, present or future), could put me in contact with those who do,
or would like to make any comments or recommendations towards this idea.
