It is my understanding that one of the reasons for the establishment of the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was, in fact, to help
accord us the respect of being a "profession" like doctors, lawyers, etc.
One of the hallmarks of a profession is that its members set their own
standards and "police" themselves. The national board is comprised of many
teachers and the assessors are also teachers. Another goal of the NBPTS is
the learning and development which occurs with self-reflection. In North
Carolina, 15 renewal credits are required each 5 years to renew our
certificates. The process of natl. bd. cert. is so highly valued that we are
granted 15 credits toward our next cycle for just going through it, whether
we pass, or not. National Board Certification is not for everyone-it is much
like grad school in 6 months and one has to really want it to make the
commitment. I am one of the lucky ones whose state supports it
wholeheartedly, but I can completely understand why Carla and others in
states where it is not understood or valued would feel differently. I just
want everyone to realize it is a way to grow for those who want it-not
something else imposed on us from above. I've also met many, many nice
people through the process. Linda in NC
