The models of the Mexican muralists, especially Rivera, and also Ringgold are
great suggestions. (Ringgold did a quilt project a few years ago celebrating
the diverse ethnic groups of Crown Heights which has been produced as a video
that your students would probably enjoy.) I agree the whole school should
somehow become involved in the project in order for its message to be fully
recognized and appreciated. You mentioned working with the English teachers
to have the kids write creatively, but I'm wondering, if the principal has
charged you with raising the collective consciousness about diversity, has
s/he done the same with teachers in other disciplines? They might be eager to
find exciting ways to teach a more diverse curriculum. There are a number of
"multi-cultural" anthologies of literature out there that English teachers
might use in their lessons that could then be linked to the mural images.
Another curricular connection might be to link social studies and world
civilization classes to your project, something as simple as studying
geography could be easily worked into a theme of cultural diversity. Good
luck and have fun!
