Re: painting in 30 minutes

Maggie and Heidi,
This 30 minute thing reminds me of my training in cake decorating. I can
spend hours and even days on a cake that is beautiful and artistic yet when I
worked briefly at a bakery I had to whip them out in 15 minutes! I even got
character cakes done in 20 minutes. One time for fun I timed myself to see
how quick I could do the typical 8" round flower spray. I did it in 6
minutes. I think however that work is like a Bob Ross. It is like a machine
with no feeling or character. No uniqueness. The thing is I could do it that
fast because I had done the SAME thing over & over for years. There is no
surprises. Yes, I had a "Happy little cake" for cheap but that is all. Art
should be and I think is held at a higher standard than that. I am glad you
made that distinction with your students Maggie. You know Bob Ross is what I
consider to be more of a CRAFT instead of art. The only positive thing I
can say about those 30 minute paintings is they might teach you some
technique. You get what you pay for.
