Cultural Diversity Mural

I have been a quiet observer of the group but value all the views and
wonderful support of everyone. My principal has asked me to have my students
(9-12 HS) do a mural for the commons area of our building. The subject is to
be cultural diversity and contain the words "We Repsect Diversity" within the
composition. The community in which I teach is small town, white, poor and
rural, respecting and accepting cultural diversity is not upper most in their
minds. I feel the issue is tremendously important to be communicated and
don't want it to be dismissed.
I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for:
1. Preparing the students for the subject -- suggestions or examples of
already existing murals on the topic; ways to get them thinking about
diversity. I thought about asking English teachers to have their students
write poems or short stories on the subject in this way working across the
curriculum. I've found however that there are about eight different English
teachers invovled with these students and I can't imagine all of them helping
with this).
2. Although of course I'd like to have the students themselves come up with
the images, are there any suggestions for imagery they might consider? I
would like to try to stay away from stereotypes and caricatures.
3. Does anyone have any ideas of a symbolic nature that might be considered.
It seems to me unless the message is strong and dramatic, its not worth
doing, but I'd also like this to be accomplished by the springtime rather
than not at all.
