Dear Gretchen,
Your situation intrigues me quite a lot. I'm impressed with all that you have
done and your open mindedness. I am the mentor teacher for art in Minneapolis
so I help the new teachers get started, make things work, give advice etc.
More and more I am mentoring people who graduated in art education around the
time that you did and have just now started teaching after 25 years out of
the field. THey tend to be VERY well versed in Lowenfeld and not
"interfering" with childrens creative expression and very resistant to DBAE.
They seem to resent me suggesting standards based education. How have you
come to see this as possible? Do you have any wisdom on bridging this?
As far as reading, I would suggest starting with the national standards. If
you want more info feel free to mail me. Gabrielle in MN, NBCT
