My students would get a great kick out of the sequence of events in my
response to the qed posts. It has been days since the original post and
I read Sharron's of today (Wasn't that who posted recently?) Then I
ASSUMED that the original problem had been 7/4 x 1/2 and went on to cram
my smarty big foot in my proverbial mouth. Well, I went back and read
the original post: 7/4 DIVIDED BY 1/2. DUH...3 1/2. Soooo... How's
this?
Sarah gets her allowance in quarters each week. She had spent some when
her friend asked her how much she still had to spend. Sarah counted and
found that she had seven quarters left (7/4). She lamented that she
only had half of her allowance left (1/2). How much allowance does
Sarah get?
Now here is the real clincher: Notice that the easiest way to explain
this is with money! My, oh my, aren't we trapped in affluenza-PBS term
for rampant consumerism? My messed-up mind is going to try to come up
with a better word problem.
