The true character of a nation is not how many battles it wins but how
it treats itself. The nation's treatment of children is self-destructive
as a nation. Our nation has never gone through reconstruction after the
Civil War. We can not own up to committing genocide against the
Americans who were here first, nor do we consider the oppression we
brought on the backs of those we enslaved. We are embarrassed to
consider what is implied in confronting racism and we are too solicitous
of the transgressor when we ask the victim to forbear.
America can certainly achieve equality. We have only to change our direction.
