I have been doing woodcuts in my art 3 class fro 28 years. We always use a
dry pine, preferably light in color and with as little grain as possible. I
pick ones with no/little knots and will cut them to size eliminating the
knots.
Recently I've used linoleum cut tools with the wood and it has been great.
