Children's theater?

Hello! I need some help determining the audience for a children's play
I've been invited to submit to a professional theater company---it's the
first children's play I've attempted (though I've produced other plays)
and I'm aiming it at 5th-8th grade--or I guess the age group that would
get some of the deeper things in a piece like Alice in Wonderland.

So what I need to know is the level of sophistication in kids around
this age --anyone?
