I dislike the aspects of grades in elementary for art also. I for
one really believe that the art teachers discretion, taste, and
favoritism seeps into judgment. We are being asked to judge a skill
that will always be developing, so even if there is a choice of
"needs improvement", that is a given. Let them experiment and if you
must give a grade don't rely on their "talent" as the only
indicator. Obviously if someone is doing their best and is always
enthusiastic then they shouldn't be penalized on your like or
dislike of their interpretation. I firmly believe in empowering a
person and building their self esteem, not tearing it down.
