I read Dissanayake's "What is Art For?" years ago, and her conclusion that
" is a normal and necessary behavior of human beings" hit home, and
that belief did affect my art teaching. I bring the attitude that we all feel
a compulsion to make our experience visual(art) comes from within us all,
not from without. I can honestly tell my students that they are all artists,
and that my job is to help them learn how to make their art more successful
in communicating their experience.
