I "inherited" the Department Head job in my district a few years ago. It
was basically a managerial job - taking care of staff needs, budgets,
scheduling, etc. After an administration change, we suddenly became
"Curriculum Leaders." Our district has supervisors for the major subject
areas who work year round and teach few classes. Those of us in the
"special' areas feel we are asked to do everything the supervisors do except
observe and still teach a full class load. I am overwhelmed with meetings,
committees, and curriculum writing. I spend all of my weekends with school
work. The district refuses to renegotiate compensation, the money is
minimal. I am more interested in a defined job description.
I would appreciate hearing how these jobs are described and compensated for
in other districts.
