We revised our district's elementary special area report cards a few years
ago to include a space for comments (taken from five numbered levels listed
on the card) for behavior and effort, as well as an achievement grade. The
grade for achievement is divided into two areas to correspond to the
components of DBAE. I give a grade for History/Criticism and one for
Aesthetics/Production. Originally, these were four separate areas, but we
found it not only tedious for 600+ students, but nearly impossible to assess
these distinctly. We grouped them in this was because the History/Criticism
usually occurs as the works of art are viewed, discussed, and compared, and
the Aesthetics/Production happen in tandem when the students are doing the
producing. It works well in terms of giving a more realistic picture of
what is really going on in class. There is also a space for written
comments to clarify further.
