Well, I teach ninth grade Studio in Art. As far as discipline goes, I
give one warning (verbal) and then a detention if the kid doesn't shape
up. I'm not big on putting name on board, then circle it, then give it a
check, then come up with a contract, etc. At this age, just a year to
year and a half away from driving a car if the kid hasn't figured out how
to behave in the classroom, we will discuss proper behavior after shool in
a teacher's detention. My system works for me. One of the things you've
got to remember is to follow through and don't make threats.
For kids coming late to class without a pass, I take one day pass away
from them. We have agenda books which hold all the kids passes for the
year put into different sections in a book for each month. If it happens
again in the same month, the kid gets a detention.
For classroom getting too loud, I have 10 or 15 minute silent work session
in which kids may not communicate with each other for the duration of the
10 minutes. If they do, they get an automatic detention without warning.
Also, I don't let them know when time is up....so if they want to drag it
out to 30 minutes, that's ok with me! ;)
