We have a program at our school called "Discovery". We (the Music teacher,
the Gym teacher and I) team teach this class one morning a week. Each day
we have a different grade level (1-5). Our classes consist of 10 - 15
students each. The students are chosen for their low skills in math or
language arts and if they are not being serviced by any other program. We
approach the skills they are low in through music, movement and art.
Apparently the traditional classroom is not working for these kids who are
many times bodily/kinesthetic, musical, or spatial learners. We do
activities such as "Multiplication Rap", creating our own alphabet or
counting cards using pictures, relay races inwhich we graph our scores,
etc. It is a wonderful program and we have seen great strides in some of
the students. They recieve much more individualized instruction (one adult
to every 3-5 kids) and they learn cooperation and social skills. I wish we
would have had this when I was in elementary school!
