<They said signatures distract from the artwork
I am a full time professional artist. I will have sold over 300 =
paintings this year (originals, no prints). Sign the paintings!! Your =
name and copyright notice, as well as any award designation (AWS, NWS, =
etc) are a part of the artwork. =20
<It is currently fashionable not to sign your work. =20
I don't give a hoot about fashion. I don't paint to trends. =20
<My opinion is that it is felt that the work should have a voice of its =
own and a personal style, so that a signature isn't necessary and, =
therefore, is redundant and distracting. You know who did the work =
because of the way it looks and what is communicated. =20
You are assuming you will start out as a famous artist and everybody =
will know your work and style. Dream on. It takes YEARS to build a name =
and reputation, years of absolute persistence and a great body of work =
in a recognizable style--and Lord help you if you change styles over the =
years (i.e.; grow as an artist). =20
<I believe they are using judgements based on the contemporary art =
climate.=20
I believe they are trying to be politically correct and not get in =
trouble because they recognized a name. =20
<I believe I think it is admirable that they are taking their jobs so =
seriously and allowing students to experience what it's like to compete. =
You are always at the mercy of the judges.=20
Right here! Nothing like a little rejection to understand the art =
climate.
<Chalk it up to experience, and lose the names.
Fight it. Your name is your character, who you are, what you are known =
for, what you are doing now. "A name is a kind of face whereby one is =
known."-Fuller Your name lasts longer than your style in art, your =
technique, your message.
