We had a great workshop on retablos and santos here in Kansas.
The artist was Charles Carrillo of Santa Fe, New Mexico. I would suggest
a book "across frontiers" Hispanic Crafts of New Mexico by Dexter Cirillo.
I'm sure you can find lots of references on the web.

I thought it was an art form exclusive to New Mexico ????
