What about the reverse of our typical approach? Give the students black

paper and have them shade with white colored pencils. I gave a demo. of

a cut-out black tree and put it on the same color paper. I drew a moon
in the upper corner and discussed where the light would hit the tree and

began high-lighting. They really seemed to get it.

I also have them remember a high value is the light area...just like a
high lighter marker makes things lighter. This also helps jog their
