One way I do critiques that seems to work for me is to do them while they
are still "works in progress". I ask the students what this student needs to
do to keep the artwork from being "nice" to being "WOW"! Since they are
still working on them, the kids don't seem to feel as protective. I make
sure they know the rules - No unkind comments, that there are good points on
every artwork. Plus, I have told them that if they are mean about an
artwork, then I will personally rip apart that particular student's artwork
(I never had, don't plan to, but it sure puts the fear in them. It's not the
criticizing over their friend's work I worry about, but the unpopular kids).
Plus, I gently lead them throughout the year. I start out doing a critique
on each artwork, offering students to put in their input. As the year
progresses, the students open up more and more until I can sit back and
