L. Meulder and R. Moore discuss exploring beauty in different cultural
settings. (Once again, thanks for the source book information.) This
topic has been repeatedly explored in my sixth grade social studies
class. Students overwhelmingly reveal that there is not just one idea
of beauty. Their appreciation for beauty has been heightened through
discussion, writing, and observation of images and objects.
During the fourth quarter, I plan to have my students each bring in an
example of something which depicts beauty from their own culture.
Students will share their samples, explain the beauty of the object and
describe how it relates to their own culture. This assignment will
serve as the springboard for multicultural book reports in English.
This hopefully will motivate students when they select stories/books
outside of their own culture for their reports.
