Re: Beauty/Ugliness

Quite a few respondents to the artednet website have reflected on the
polarizing way young people treat the notions of beauty and ugliness. ("I
won't date her; she's UGLY!", etc.) It would probably be a worthwhile
classroom project to see whether student can compose works (painted,
sculpted, written, etc.) that are both beautiful AND ugly. Socrates was
said by some ancient witnesses to be "beautifully ugly." It might be
worthwhile discussing whether this makes sense and, if so, how. Are there
buildings, public artworks, etc. in your area that could plausibly be
called "beautifully ugly"?
