Hi Mary Pat,
I did pop can sculptures with grade nine students who were really
about grade seven in ability. Yes there were a few injuries, none serious,
about three of them. I gave them a thorough talking to in the beginning
about safety. You just kind of stab into the pop can with scissors and
begin cutting shapes. I had students make sunbursts and flowers and all
kinds of things. They used glue on a cardboard base, but the glue was not
real successful. The best ones were somehow connected using the metal
itself. Some didn't do much with the material and quickly yelled, "I'm
done!!" so it would be good next time I do it to maybe talk about Frank
Stella or something to get more thinking into it. They did seem to enjoy
it. Peggy
