I am continuing my research on gender equality and differences for my
final project in my art education class dealing with social and cultural
factors in art education. I have already done a presentation on this
issue which involved research of two artists who address it in their
artwork. I explored the invisible and visible aspects of their artwork
and these aspects will be applied to my development of ideas for
teaching the issue. I am proposing an artmaking lesson along with a
written paragraph in which the student will explain the meaning of at
least two symbols or elements in their artwork which are related to
their gender. Before the artmaking, students will collect information
and/or images about gender. The studio activity will take the form of a
self-portrait and students will be encouraged to use information about
gender collected from sources they see everyday; bringing in gender
ideas that affect their lives the most. Any helpful suggestions for the
development of such a lesson would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
