Dear Lisa,

All you can do is explain to the parent as you have done so well in your post.
However, your explanation is likely to fall upon deaf ears, as many such
parents I have encountered cannot see the value of art, let alone other
cultures. Most likely, this parent is convinced that art and artists are Non-
Christian, if not satanic.

Fundamentalism and the Religious Right abound here in my home state (Georgia),
and everything related to art is suspect. There is little I can do that
doesn't seem to offend or threaten someone with this limited view of God.
Only the strength of my religious convictions and the passion for my subject
keep me going.

When you speak to this parent, try to be as open and professional-friendly as
possible, and assure her that you understand her concerns; certainly share
with her that you are a Christian also. Good luck!
